Nobody Told Me Getting Older Would Be This Weird

One day you're young and carefree. The next day you're discussing reading glasses and comparing magnesium supplements.

Nobody Warned Me

When I was younger, I thought getting older meant becoming wiser.

Maybe a little more mature.

Maybe a little more settled.

What nobody told me was that it would also be weird.

Really weird.

Not bad.

Just weird.

The List Keeps Growing

Nobody told me my knees would start making sound effects.

Nobody told me I would need reading glasses but still refuse to admit it.

Nobody told me I would walk into a room and completely forget why I was there.

Then remember.

Then forget again.

Nobody told me I'd get excited about things that would have horrified my younger self.

A new vacuum.

Storage containers.

A bird feeder.

A comfortable bra.

A good night's sleep.

The Salon Conversations

The funny thing is, I hear the same conversations in the salon every day.

Women sit down and start comparing vitamins the way we used to compare handbags.

We're discussing protein intake.

Magnesium.

Collagen.

Hormones.

Fiber.

Things twenty-five-year-old us wouldn't have believed.

At some point, every salon conversation turns into a combination support group and medical symposium.

Nobody knows exactly how it happens.

It just does.

The Great Trade-Off

Getting older is strange because some things get harder.

But some things get easier.

We're less worried about fitting in.

Less concerned about trends.

Less interested in impressing people we don't even like.

We've learned that peace is valuable.

So is comfort.

So is protecting our time.

And honestly?

That's a pretty good trade.

The Best Part

The best part about getting older is realizing you're not doing it alone.

Every woman I know is trying to figure it out as she goes.

We're all comparing notes.

We're all laughing at things we never expected.

We're all wondering where the time went.

And we're all discovering that growing older isn't nearly as scary as we thought.

It's just a little weirder than advertised.
